Why Treat Acne?
Acne affects people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds. One common myth about acne is that you must let it run its course. Without treatment, dark spots and permanent scars can appear on the skin as acne clears. Acne treatments can also boost a person’s self-esteem.
What Causes Acne?
It’s a combination of hormone secretion, oil glands and bacteria. When a pore becomes blocked the oil and bacteria get trapped, causing redness inflammation and ultimately a pimple. Adult acne is more common than you’d think; approximately 38% of adults from 25-34 have had a breakout within the last year. Stress is the primary cause, but weather, heat, and humidity can also contribute. Cosmetics can also cause acne.
What Is Considered Severe Acne?
Moderate to moderately severe acne consists of several whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules that cover from ¼ to ¾ of the face and/or other parts of the body. Severe acne consists of deep cysts, redness, swelling, extreme damage to the skin and scarring.
Accutane®
I exclusively prescribe Accutane® for acne, as it is so effective, and the only doctor-prescribed medicine that consistently works. This is a strong medicine that can help prevent scarring and treat active disease. Accutane is not for everyone – that’s why it is best to call DR. LAUBER- there is never a fee to discuss your case with me on the phone. Many of my patients are very worried about the “PURGE EFFECT” i.e. getting worse at the onset of therapy. With the manner in which I prescribe ACCUTANE– using the lowest dose manufactured- this risk is virtually eliminated and hence not a concern. Other issues that patients worry about are the side effects- which the internet and YouTube have sadly blown out of proportion. When dosed properly any and all side effects are completely minimized to dry lips only. Be advised that you are not mandated to have to be on two forms of birth control for this medication- that is completely false and sadly has permeated the internet.
